Ryan Sessegnon and the perfect opportunity presented to him by Danny Rose for Everton clash

The Tottenham team have a rare midweek off as they prepare for another trip to Merseyside on Sunday to face Everton.

Not back in Champions League action until next Wednesday as they travel to Serbia to take on Red Star Belgrade, it's the return of the Carabao Cup this week with 16 teams looking to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Lilywhites are not one of the 11 Premier League teams taking part following their shock exit at Colchester United in the last round, thus meaning that Mauricio Pochettino will have a good few days with his players as they look to put things right.

The manager did make two changes to his defence on Sunday against Liverpool as Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose came in for Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies.

However, the England left-back will not be able to face the Toffees after picking up his fifth booking of the season for a late tackle on Jordan Henderson.

Mauricio Pochettino: off-field team bonding will help the squad

His absence will present Davies with a chance to try and make the position his own after so far playing in six games for the team this season after going under the knife in the summer.

Impressive last Tuesday in the 5-0 drubbing of Red Star at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, plenty of fans were left shocked by the manager's decision to drop the Welshman back down to the bench in favour of Rose.

The left-back's suspension could also benefit another player given that there will be a place up for grabs in the 18-man squad.

Ryan Sessegnon has yet to appear for Spurs this season due to the hamstring injury he sustained on international duty in the summer and he may be part of the travelling squad if fit enough to take part.

Pochettino was quizzed about the 19-year-old's fitness ahead of the trip to Anfield and he claimed that he will have to wait for an opportunity given the amount of players at his disposal at present.

"Maybe he will be available but it’s always the same – when one is in, one is out," he said. "If you plan for him to  be on the bench you need to put someone out of the bench.

"We have only 18 players, 29 now with Michel [Vorm].

"That is a problem but it is about waiting, being consistent and showing his quality and to wait for the opportunity that he will have during the season."

It does seem like the perfect opportunity to finally include Sessegnon in the squad after he returned to training with the rest of his teammates after the international break two weeks ago.

In the same boat as Giovani Lo Celso in terms of joining the club in the summer and spending a good amount of time in the treatment room, the Argentine has been eased in over the past two games against Red Star Belgrade and Liverpool with cameo appearances from the bench.

Pochettino does tend to introduce new signings in slowly at the club but he unfortunately doesn't have a Carabao Cup game this week to do just that following their embarrassing defeat against Colchester United last month.

Like Lo Celso, Sessegnon, who is seen as Rose's long-term successor, is going to have to do with appearances off the bench for now as he looks to build up his fitness and challenge for a place in the team for the foreseeable future.

Sunday is the perfect chance to do that fitness permitting and all Spurs fans will be keeping close tabs on the teamsheet comes 3.30pm as they patiently wait for him to finally make his debut.
