Ryan Reynolds bows down to Joaquin Phoenix as Joker film beats Deadpool box office record

Joker has officially overtaken Deadpool as the most successful R-rated film of all time, and Ryan Reynolds has congratulated the film in his own unconventional way.

Despite its fair share of controversy, the film – starring Joaquin Phoenix – had already surpassed 2018's Venom to score the biggest October opening of all time.

Days after reports that Joker was on course to overtake Deadpool's global box office takings of $783m, the Todd Phillips-directed film managed to hit the $788.3m mark.

After Reynolds discovered the news, he posted a re-working of the Joker poster on Twitter, which features the phrase: "You motherf***er."

Box office experts are predicting Joker will hit the $900m mark over the next few weeks.

Phoenix recently said he would be very interested in starring in a sequel following rave reviews of his performance.

According to reports, Jared Leto – who played the DC villain in 2016's Suicide Squad – was left “alienated and upset” when he heard about plans to make the film.

Joker is out in cinemas now.
