Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney 'serious' about Gareth Bale Wrexham offer

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney insist they're serious about bringing Gareth Bale out of retirement to play for Wrexham, but admit they have their doubts over whether a move will happen.

The co-owners took to Twitter recently to seemingly give Bale the opportunity to sign for the Dragons, who recently secured promotion to League Two after a 15-year exile from the EFL.

McElhenney offered Bale the opportunity to take in a round of golf together, which he suggested he would largely use as a chance to try and convince Bale to put pen to paper at the Racecourse.

Reynolds even went so far as tweet a picture of Bale mocked up in a Wrexham shirt, adding further fuel to the fire, although it must be said the efforts from both men appeared to be tongue-in-cheek.

However, in an interview with S4C, McElhenney insisted the offer was serious.

The Always Sunny in Philadelphia star said: “I think there’s seriousness from our side, but I don’t know that there’s seriousness from his. I think he’s happy.”

Deadpool star Reynolds, added: “I’m also weirdly happy for him to do exactly what he wants to do with his life. He’s given up so much for a sport that he loves. It’s fun, though. I like that we can kind of do some stuff that’s a little outside the box of convention when it comes to goofing around.”

He later added: “I didn’t think Ben Foster would be coming over and he did.”

Foster did come out of retirement to join the Dragons, the club where he started his career, and produced a memorable penalty save in what proved to be a defining win over title contenders Notts County.

It remains to be seen whether the goalkeeper will stay on for Wrexham's upcoming season in League Two, but it seems to be more likely than a possible move for five-time Champions League winner Bale.

The 33-year-old announced his retirement in January after leading Wales to their first World Cup campaign since 1958, and appears to be enjoying life away from the game.

When asked recently about whether a move to north Wales could be on the cards, he replied: "No I don't think so. I was more looking for a free round of golf off Rob!

"I'm sure we'll have a chat and a joke but I'm quite happy where I am.

"I'm spending a fair bit of time with my kids and my wife. Time I've lost so much of over the years being committed to football.

"So I'm just enjoying family life and playing some golf."
