Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElheneny to hold Zoom call with Wrexham fans in buy bid

Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds will present his vision for Wrexham FC in a Zoom call to club supporters.

The Deadpool star and Rob McElhenney, his partner in the surprise bid for the National League club, will address the fans from across the Atlantic due to the Covid-19 restrictions.

Reynolds, 43, confirmed his interest in a reply to a 2012 tweet that stated: “You never know when Ryan Reynolds is going to turn up in Wrexham.”

Ryan told his 16.5million followers: “Yep, you never know. I’ve waited 8 years to respond to this tweet.”

The original post was in a chat between pals Shannon May, 26, and Lois Morus, 27, when Shannon moaned about having to draw a naked middle-aged man in an art class.

Shannon, now living on the Wirral, said: “I jokingly said it would be a lot better if we were drawing someone like Ryan Reynolds. It is crazy to think Ryan has seen that tweet and decided to reply. It is bizarre.”

Lois, now living in Carmarthen, said: “It’s hilarious and a little nuts. I’m not a football fan but I’m a fan of Ryan Reynolds so I could be convinced to go if he’s there.”

Any takeover could lead to a £2million investment in the club, which has been in fan ownership since 2011.

In a vote, 1,223 of Wrexham Supporters Trust members backed the move and 31 opposed it earlier this week.

They had no idea that Reynolds and McElhenney, 43, an actor best known as “Mac” in hit series It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, were behind the bid until the next day.

Club director Spencer Harris said being contacted by the stars was “surreal”. But he said: “This is a very serious endeavour for them. I know they are very passionate about this.”

Captain Shaun Pearson said: “It’s potentially a big opportunity for the club.”
