Ryan Porteous' Rangers red gets the ref watch treatment as Dermot Gallagher 'applauds' development

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher reckons Ryan Porteous can have no complaints about his red card against Rangers.

The Hibs star saw red on the half hour mark after a full-on side-on challenge on Joe Aribo.

It derailed his side's momentum as Rangers went on to win from 1-0 down through Kemar Roofe and Alfredo Morelos strikes.

Nick Walsh's decision to brandish a straight red has generated plenty of debate but the IFAB rulebook suggests the sending off was fair.

And Gallagher, who spent 15 years as a top flight whistler in England, said on Sky Sports' Ref Watch that he can have no real arguments due to the reckless nature of the challenge.

He said: "Yeah, it's a red card. He goes over the ball.

"Luckily he didn't catch the man as badly as he could, but you can see where his leg is and the speed he went at.

"It's a red card."

Gallagher also threw his support behind the proposed introduction of VAR into the Scottish game.

The SFA and SPFL will meet this week to discuss potentially introducing the controversial technology into the Scottish Premiership.

And Gallagher said: "Anything that improves decision making on the field has got to be applauded, doesn't it?

"That extra layer will give them the parachute to get decisions right that they wouldn't have in the past.

"It's got to be good."
