Ryan Porteous hands Scotland vs Spain 'incredible' tag as he thanks Tartan Army for Hampden support

Ryan Porteous has hailed Scotland's famous win over Spain as 'incredible'.

Steve Clarke's men recorded a 2-0 win over the visitors under the lights at Hampden to make it two wins from two in the Euro 2024 qualifying section. Scott McTominay - who netted a double from the bench against Cyprus in Saturday's opener - was handed a start and rewarded the faith of his manager with the two goals to take his tally to four in two outings in this campaign.

It was a night to remember for the Tartan Army as they created a stunning atmosphere in Mount Florida. Former Hibs man Porteous - now plying his trade at Watford - showed his class once again with a big performance against Luis de la Fuente's men. It was just a third cap for the 24-year-old who also played the full 90 against Cyprus. He is yet to concede a goal as a Scotland player having made his debut in the Nations League draw with Ukraine.

He wrote on Instagram: "Incredible night at Hampden.

"Two clean sheets and six points from the opening qualifiers. Thank you for all the support."

Speaking after the win, boss Clarke told Viaplay Sports: "I'm delighted with the team's performance, I thought the players were outstanding from the first minute to last minute. Five changes but the dynamics, the enthusiasm and the quality the team didn't change which is great for us. It feels like a step forward in what we are trying to do as a nation and as a team.

"But it's only six points - you don't qualify with six points, which is what I said to the team after. When we had the ball we looked a threat, we didn't have an awful lot of possession but what we had we used very well and that was always going to be important.

"The defensive shape is good, the distance between the units is really good which stops a large part of Spain's game - but the credit goes to the players on the pitch, they're the guys who have to do the hard yards.

"Speaking to a few after the game, they have said they're physically tired and mentally tired - thinking all the time about where the Spanish players are going to be.

"It was competitive for both teams. That's what you expect with the first seed against the second seed in the group, you always expect a big game and a big win, but there's teams still to go. One bad game can always set you back so we will stay focused and grounded.

"That's what we are trying to build. I said to the players, 'look - that's what it means to the country if you can produce a big result against one of the top teams in Europe - people will speak about you in years to come."
