Ryan Porteous excited by Hibs' McCrorie link as Steven Gerrard admits move for Rangers man 'closer'

Ryan Porteous is excited at the prospect of linking up with Scotland under-21 teammate Ross McCrorie at Easter Road after it emerged Hibs had launched a second bid for the Rangers youngster.

The versatile 22-year-old is high on Jack Ross's shortlist, however the men in green and white side saw their initial offer knocked back by the Ibrox club.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard confirmed a second offer for the Gers' academy product had been received, revealing it "moved the deal closer".

And Porteous - who received his maiden call up to the full national side last year - admitted McCrorie would be a good addition to the Easter Road ranks after the departure of fellow centre half Adam Jackson to Lincoln City earlier this week.

He said: "If we could get a player of that calibre to come here it'd be brilliant.

"He can play in a lot of different positions and is a player I really enjoy playing with."

"Obviously I don't have a say in that but he's a really, really good player."

The pair last lined up together at international level for a goalless draw against Lithuania days after leading Scott Gemmill's youngsters to an impressive 2-1 win in Croatia.

Porteous stepped into the first team breach for the Euro 2020 qualifying double header against Cyprus and Kazakhstan in November, though failed to feature in either fixture.

McCrorie spent last season on loan at English League One side Portsmouth, often switching between roles at full back, central defence and holding midfield and Porteous believes his versatility is perfectly suited to the squad at Easter Road.

"He's captain of Scotland Under-21s and a really good player," Porteous said.

"He's a good role model and a good professional. He takes care of himself really well and looks after the boys. He doesn't really care about where he plays either. He just gets on with it.
