Ryan Porteous and the Rangers vs Hibs rulebook wording that makes red card an open and shut case

We love a red card rammy in Scottish football, don't we?

This weekend alone we've seen two big ones grab the headlines across the SPFL.

Partick Thistle loanee Mouhamed Niang became one of the quickest players ever to be sent off when he lasted just 25 seconds on the pitch against Cove Rangers on Saturday.

But the furore over that one lasted only 24 hours before it was overtaken in the news cycle after Ryan Porteous was dismissed at Ibrox.

The Hibs star lunged recklessly in on Joe Aribo and there was little hesitation from whistler Nick Walsh who flashed him a straight red card.

As is the way of it, the decision was debated heavily with fans and pundits on both sides putting their arguments across.

Neil McCann couldn't argue while Tam McManus labelled it a "disgraceful" call.

Amid all the shades of grey, however, thankfully there is some black and white.

It comes from the International Football Association Board (IFAB) rulebook which is clear on what constitutes a sending off and what doesn't.

And it's not great news for Porteous as it finds him guilty of "serious foul play."

It states: "A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

"Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play."

Given that Porteous did lunge in recklessly from the side, at pace and without an apparent regard for Aribo's safety, it's difficult to argue.

While it may be viewed as harsh in some quarters, by the laws of the game, it was a red card.
