Less than 48 hours after he crashed on the final lap of the Daytona 500, Ryan Newman is out of the hospital.

Rousch Fenway Racing tweeted a picture Wednesday afternoon of Newman walking out of Halifax Medical Center holding his two daughters’ hands.

Hours earlier, the team released a statement saying Newman was “fully alert and walking around” and even joking with people by his side during his hospital stay.

“Ryan Newman continues to show great improvement after Monday night’s last-lap accident at Daytona International Speedway,” the team said. “The veteran driver is fully alert and walking around Halifax Medical Center. True to his jovial nature, he has also been joking around with staff, friends and family while spending time playing with his two daughters.”

After he entered the hospital in serious condition with non-life threatening injuries, Newman was ”awake and speaking” as of Tuesday afternoon. Newman’s car flipped, collided with the wall and was hit by another car after he was bumped during the race’s backstretch.

The severity of the crash caused winner Denny Hamlin and his team to shut down the celebration, as drivers wished Newman a speedy recovery.
