NASCAR driver Ryan Newman is in serious condition with non-life-threatening injuries after a horrendous last-lap crash at the Daytona 500.
Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR executive vice president, said Newman was transported to Halifax Medical Center for further treatment and evaluation.
"Ryan Newman is being treated at Halifax Medical Center. His is in serious condition, but doctors have indicated his injuries are not life threatening," O'Donnell said. "We appreciate your thoughts and prayers and ask that you respect the privacy of Ryan and his family during this time."
During the final run to the finish line of the race, Ryan Blaney drove his car aggressively and soon bumped the left rear of Newman's car. Newman lost control of his No. 6 Ford and slammed into the wall, before becoming airborne.
As Newman's car descended, the car No. 32 car of Corey LaJoie hit the driver's side of Newman's car at top speed, sending it airborne again and into multiple rolls.
Newman's car came to rest on the track as an eerie silence fell over the iconic track.
"Definitely was trying to push him to a win," Blaney said. "I don't want to say, 'Those things happen' I feel really bad about it. Man, but close one. I hope Ryan is all right."
Workers eventually lifted Newman's car onto its wheels. The 42-year-old and 2008 Daytona 500 winner eventually was extricated from the wreckage and transported to a local hospital.
Fans and others reacted the Newman's crash on social media.
President Trump, who was at Daytona on Sunday for the start of the race before it was postponed by rain, tweeted, "Praying for Ryan Newman, a great and brave @NASCAR driver! #PrayingForRyan"
