Ryan Murphy has officially confirmed the upcoming season of American Horror Story will be a continuation of Coven with fans treated to a bunch of teases involving beloved characters Jessica Lange, Sarah Paulson and Emma Roberts.
Here’s everything we know about the 13th season of everyone’s favourite horror anthology!
Who is returning for American Horror Story season 13?
Earlier this week, Murphy, who created the horror anthology series, hinted at what fans can expect from the new instalment while debuting pics of Lange — who played Supreme witch Fiona Goode in AHS’ third season, Coven — on social media.
“The return of Jessica Lange,” Murphy captioned the images, in which the actress sports a long blue blazer and an updo while looking out of a window.
Shortly after, another image was shared, featuring Paulson as her Coven Supreme character Cordelia Goode.
“AHS 13. The Return of @mssarahcatharinepaulson as Cordelia Goode,” the caption — which was shared by both Murphy and Paulson — reads.
“The Supreme Rises. And yes we have rebuilt the entire Robichaux Academy. Coming this September.”
But the reveals didn’t stop there. Roberts, who played Madison Montgomery in Coven, joined her witchy sisters when announcing she will also be returning to AHS on social media. Recreating her iconic viral line from the series, Roberts told fans: “Surprise b****h. Bet you thought you’d seen the last of me.”
Other returning cast members include Angela Bassett and Kathy Bates, with the addition of newcomer Ariana Grande, so we can rest assured that Coven will be revisited in a major way when the new AHS instalment drops.
What is American Horror Story season 13 about?
Up until this point, plot details about AHS’ new season, its 13th overall, were kept under wraps, but Murphy confirmed that the new episodes will extend on Coven in the comments of his Instagram Post.
In response to a fan urging Murphy to make the new season a “Coven extension”, Murphy wrote, “Done”, all-but confirming AHS will retread its witchy roots.
Coven, which dropped back in 2013, is a cult favourite among AHS fans, and followed a group of New Orleans witches as they fought their extinction three hundred years after the Salem Witch Trials.
When will it be released?
Speaking of which (witch?), AHS’ 13th season will premiere on Halloween (duh!) October 31, and will be the successor to the Kim Kardashian-starring Delicate that landed in 2024.
In the time between, Murphy has tapped Kardashian again for the widely panned legal drama All’s Fair, and again caught strays over Love Story, the just-finished show which dramatised JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette’s romance.
We’ll be sure to update you if any further AHS season 13 tea drops, but in the meantime, dust off those cauldrons and practice those spells, because Coven might just be in our future.
