Ryan Loft back in starting contention as Bristol Rovers get good news on two other injuries

Bristol Rovers striker Ryan Loft is set to return from a hamstring injury this weekend, with the target man in starting contention.

The 25-year-old has come through training unscathed this week and he is set to play some part against Peterborough United at the Mem on Saturday. Loft has missed the past three games after being forced off in the draw at Sheffield Wednesday last month.

His return is a welcome boost for manager Joey Barton. Loft has become an integral player for Rovers this season, with his physical and intelligent performances leading the line giving the Gas a new dimension in attack, helping to bring the best out of the likes of Aaron Collins around him.

Loft has six goals and two assists in all competitions this term, making up for lost time after a slow start in a Rovers shirt. He joined the club from Scunthorpe United in January and scored just once before the end of the campaign, with an unfortunately-timed injury knocking him out of his stride after impressing in his debut.

"He’s back training," Barton said before confirming he is in contention to start. "He got through training fine today. It gives us another option."

There was also good news regarding Harry Anderson and Paul Coutts. Captain Coutts has missed five games after sustaining an ankle injury in training, while Anderson incurred a groin issue in the same game as Loft at Hillsborough.

Barton said both men could be back earlier than expected, with fears they may not be seen in the blue and white quarters again until 2023, although he said it is still to soon to offer a definitive timeframe.

"Harry and Paul are both feeling fine, albeit there is still a question mark over their return dates," Barton said. "They both feel a lot better than their return dates were, so good news in that way, albeit we haven’t got anything concrete.

"Harry has been on a treadmill today so he is moving. Couttsy has been walking around without his boot yesterday and today, but I’m not necessarily sure he’s allowed to. He’s back now after he had a couple of weeks at home with his family."
