Ryan Kerrigan says the Redskins’ defense ‘looks really good on paper’

As is to be expected, much of the tempered hype surrounding the Washington Redskins this offseason has revolved around the offense—mainly rookie QB Dwayne Haskins.

But if Washington is to succeed in 2019 and bring hope to a troubled fan base, it will be the defense who is the catalyst.

““We’ve got a lot of potential,” said outside linebacker Ryan Kerrigan, via the Washington Post. “We look really good on paper right now. We have to put the work in each and every day. We have to not be sometimes good. We have to be all-the-time good.”

While offseason workouts and training sessions have rolled along, the defensive side of the ball has thrived. You could blame it on poor performances by the offense and quarterbacks who find themselves in a new system, but the defensive secondary has been ball hawking for the better part of a month now. The veteran guile of Landon Collins mixed with the braggadocios of Josh Norman is enough to turn some attention to the defense, but the addition of beasts like Montez Sweat alongside Daron Payne on the front lines surely will give the Redskins an edge.

“I know it’s early,” Gruden said Tuesday, “but I like our defensive mentality, No. 1. I think we have a tough edge to us.”

The NFL is an offensive game in today’s day and age, but the Redskins are attempting to get back to basics and win games by shutting down the other team. Don’t expect to see many shootouts for Washington this season —at least on paper, this defense looks like the real deal.
