Ryan Kerrigan is one of the most underpaid stars in the NFL

We’ve mentioned before that Ryan Kerrigan is arguably the most important player that the Washington Redskins have, but it is time to show him some love once again.

As training camp inches closer and the sporting world as a whole begins its transition into football season, we can look at some of the best contracts in the league (meaning team-friendly) and show some appreciation for the athletes who have a big hand in helping their city to success.

One of those players is DE Ryan Kerrigan, and his impact on the Redskins is nearly unmatched. In 2015, Kerrigan signed a five-year, $57.5 million deal in Washington. In that time, he has racked up the second most sacks in the NFL, ranking behind only one player — former Super Bowl MVP Von Miller.

Kerrigan’s contract saw him paid $24M over the first two years of his deal in Washington, followed by team options from 2017-2020. When you look at his level of production, compared to the financial burden that his contract presents to the team, it is arguably one of the biggest wins in football for the Redskins. Kerrigan is currently the 55th highest paid defender in the NFL, and his counterparts — such as Miller, Aaron Donald, and Khalil Mack — all rank in the top-five for their sizable contracts among defensive players.

Kerrigan has never been a flashy player, and is not likely to hold out and demand a new contract — he just wants to play football. But if he keeps playing at the level we’ve seen over the last five years, a sizable payday is surely coming his way.
