Ryan Kent to escape Rangers ban with winger free to face Aberdeen in Premiership opening day clash

Ryan Kent will avoid a ban and be free to face Aberdeen in Rangers’ Premiership curtain raiser in a fortnight.

Assistant boss Gary McAllister admitted fears the winger could be suspended for the start of the domestic campaign after he was red carded against Lyon in their Veolia Trophy opener for slapping Brazilian defender Marcelo.

But Record Sport has discovered Kent won't face any further disciplinary action with the French Football Federation admitting they have no jurisdiction over the competition.

Tournament organisers Lyon also confirmed the 23-year-old is available for tomorrow's clash with Nice with no further action expected.

Kent saw red after retaliating to Marcelo’s goading right under the nose of referee Karim Abed shortly before half-time in Thursday’s 2-0 win.

McAllister said after the match: “It would be a big blow if Ryan missed domestic games as a result of the red card here.

“He’s wounded in the dressing room and he knows he made a big mistake. You just can’t lift your hands.

“He’s only two feet away from the referee and it was a bad decision.”

Had a charge of violent conduct made its way back to the SFA then the player could have been hit with a two-match ban which would have ruled him out of the Pittodrie clash on August 1 and the visit of St Mirren a week later,

A year ago Jozo Simunovic was banned for Celtic’s opening two league fixtures last season after being sent off in a friendly against St Gallen in Switzerland.

On that occasion the referee, Fedayi San, included the incident in his match report to the Swiss FA who in turn filed a misconduct charge to the SFA.

Kent’s red card was the only negative for Gerrard’s troops on Thursday as they regrouped to repel the Ligue 1 side’s onslaught after the break - even producing enough chances to extend the lead.

Rangers now go into tonight’s clash with Nice knowing a victory will land them the trophy after Patrick Viera’s side opened with a 1-1 draw against Celtic.
