Ryan Kent starts for Liverpool in pre-season friendly as Rangers target gets the nod from Jurgen Klopp

Ryan Kent has been named in Liverpool's starting XI for the club's first pre-season friendly against Tranmere Rovers.

Rangers are keen to bring the winger back to Ibrox for a second spell this summer but are being made to wait as Jurgen Klopp runs the rule over him.

The Glasgow giants are understood to have first option on Kent should he be allowed to leave on loan again - although Liverpool could be tempted to sell the player should a suitable bid be forthcoming.

With the Anfield club valuing the player upwards of £10m then that rules out a permanent bid from Ibrox. But Steven Gerrard is playing the long game in the hope of landing his top target for another season on loan.

However, for the time being, he will look to impress for the Champions League winners.

Klopp is fielding two different teams against Tranmere and Kent has been included in the first-half side, lining up alongside the likes of James Milner and Alex Oxlade Chamberlain.

Many of the Reds' bigger hitters are yet to return, with Mo Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino involved in the African Cup of Nations and the Copa America respectively.

Rangers, meanwhile, are closing in on their eighth summer signing with Swedish defender Filip Helander set to join from Bologna.
