Ryan Kent Liverpool chances assessed as Rangers wait stretches on

Ryan Kent will be in the Liverpool squad as they head out to America on Tuesday to step-up their pre-season preparations.

But the winger is no closer to knowing his destination for the upcoming season as Steven Gerrard continues to wait patiently in his bid to land the winger for a second season on loan at Rangers .

Kent is the final piece of the jigsaw for Gerrard as he tools up for a monumental season at Ibrox and the all-or-nothing effort to stop Celtic reaching 9 in a row.

It's a challenge known to appeal to Kent too after the 22-year-old got a taste for the Old Firm in his impressive campaign in Govan last time out.

But Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could be about to offer Kent a brand new challenge back at Anfield. The Reds manager wants a closer look at the player who still has three years left on his contract with Liverpool.

And after starting the European champions' two pre-season friendlies last week, the winger is said to have made a huge impression on the German.

Kent was lively in the win over Bradford on Sunday and had a hand in all three goals in the 3-1 victory.

Rangers are understood to have first option on the player should he go out on loan again. But just what are his chances of being kept at Anfield and playing a part as Klopp looks to go one better than last season's agonising second placed finish in the Premier League?

Ian Doyle, the Anfield correspondent at our sister paper the Liverpool Echo , has been watching developments with Kent and Klopp closely.

And he reckons the winger produced the wow factor in Sunday's friendly win over Bradford to give the Reds boss something to think about.

"It was Klopp who gave Kent his first and so far only Liverpool appearance in the scratch FA Cup team at Exeter City in January 2016," said Doyle.

"Whether the winger is capable of adding to that tally - and saving the club a possible trip into the transfer market in the process - is what the Reds boss is now assessing having resisted, at least initially, attempts from Rangers to take the player back on loan.

"Kent was quiet in the romp at Tranmere Rovers on Thursday. At Bradford though, a capacity crowd saw what all the fuss was about.

"Once more mining the left flank, the winger appeared far more confident, running at the home defence at every opportunity.

"What's more, he made a difference. From a short corner, Kent cut the ball back for James Milner to fire in the opener via James Vaughan's head, and then moments later was brought down by Sean Scannell inside the area to earn the penalty from which Milner scored the second.

"Kent, too, contributed to the third, again racing inside the area before rolling the ball across to the incoming Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, whose blocked shot was converted from an acute angle by Rhian Brewster.

"With Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane absent and Xherdan Shaqiri injured, the next few weeks, starting with the US tour, represent a real opportunity.

"Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla and Sporting Lisbon will represent a significant step up in class.

"But as Kent demonstrated two years ago, bigger rivals can bring the best out of him."
