Ryan Kent labelled 'panic buy' by BBC pundit after former Leeds United target seals deadline day move

Chris Sutton has branded Rangers £7m signing of former Leeds United target Ryan Kent a "panic buy"

The ex-Liverpool winger was a target for the Whites earlier this summer, with Victor Orta and company close to agreeing a deal to bring the 22-year-old to Elland Road before shifting their attention to Arsenal's Eddie Nketiah following Kemar Roofe's departure to Anderlecht.

Whilst Marcelo Bielsa was keen on Kent, the club opted for a more like-for-like replacement in Nketiah, who has made a strong start to his career in West Yorkshire.

With Kent's opportunities at Anfield limited and following a host of loan spells, the Reds were reported to be unwilling to sanction a loan deal, instead demanding a permanent transfer, but had reportedly priced out Kent's other suitors Rangers out of a move.

However, that proved not to be the case as he made a £7m switch to the Glasgow club, where he spent last season on loan, in the dying hours of the transfer window on Monday.

Despite winning the Scottish Premier League Young Player of the Season last term, former Norwich City striker and BBC pundit Sutton has labelled the transfer as a "panic buy", following Saturday Old Firm derby defeat.

Steven Gerrard's side were beaten by 2-0 by Celtic, which Sutton believe has been the catalyst behind this late bit of business.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5Live Monday Night Club, he insisted: "He's rattled, they're panic buying. Today, £7m!

"There are question marks, where are they finding this money from. I think he's signed over 25 players.

"How many wingers have rangers get. Thye signed Ojo, they signed Hastie, they signed Jones, I know Jones has an injury. They've got Arfield, Oribo.

"They are rattled, they are shaken by it all."
