Ryan Jack's Scotland and Rangers importance laid bare as incredible double stat proves midfielder's worth

He never grabs the headlines or goes for glory but Ryan Jack is becoming a vital cog in a robust Scotland machine.

And a surprising pair of stats explain how vital he has been to both Steve Clarke's Hampden revolution and that of Steven Gerrard at Rangers across the city.

Scotland are yet to lose a competitive game when the Rangers midfielder starts, with just one draw and six wins from seven games - if you count Thursday night and last month's penalty wins as victories.

And in the three goals conceded by Rangers in the league this season, Jack was off the park for all of them.

He clocked 120 minutes in Belgrade and also started the shootout victory over Israel last month, before home wins against Slovakia and the Czech Republic in the Nations League.

Indeed, Jack has only lost twice in his nine Scotland appearances, one being a 2017 friendly against the Netherlands in which he started at right-back.

That was followed one year later in a defeat to Belgium's golden generation with Jack coming off the bench as his team already trailed 3-0.

He's rarely among the goals like influential Celtic playmaker Ryan Christie was, nor is he a standout defender like Motherwell stopper Declan Gallagher.

But on Thursday night Jack was tasked with keeping a close eye on Serbian threat Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and the Lazio man wasn't given a sniff before being replaced by Aleksandar Katai with 20 minutes to go.

He provides the ideal balance to the dynamism of Aston Villa star John McGinn and seems to have developed a surprise understanding with title rival Callum McGregor in dark blue.

28-year-old Jack now has an international tournament to strut his stuff at, and may come up against Ibrox team-mate Borna Barisic with Croatia in Scotland's group.

He'll also prove vital over the remaining two fixtures of the international break with just two points required from trips to Slovakia and Israel to top the Nations League and advance Scotland's standing in the UEFA coefficient once more.
