Ryan Hedges reckons Aberdeen can cope with squad issues as FaceTime rally proves Dons' fighting spirit

Ryan Hedges says Aberdeen have the strength in depth to deliver without a band of big names.

The Dons were missing eight players for Sunday’s 4-0 defeat to Rangers with Niall McGinn, Jonny Hayes, Dylan McGeouch, Scott Wright and Marley Watkins out through injury.

Connor McLennan, Lewis Ferguson and Ross McCrorie are self-isolating after being caught up in the Scotland Under-21s Covid outbreak.

But with a trip to Hamilton looming on Wednesday, Hedges said: “We are one big squad, fighting for the same cause and heading in the right direction. Hopefully that will be evident over the next couple of weeks.

"Hamilton is huge. Having that quick turnaround before the next game is the best thing as we won’t be dwelling on Sunday.

“We’ll look at the things we have done well and haven’t done well. We will look at what we can improve and hopefully put that right.”

Ferguson and McLennan have been left frustrated over being sidelined having played well up until being ruled as close contacts.

Hedges said: “We had a FaceTime with them on the coach down on Friday. You can see the togetherness of the squad we have here.

“It was very disappointing, especially as it happened outwith Aberdeen’s control.

“At the moment these things happen. We just have to try to keep moving forward.”

The winger accepts that Aberdeen’s plans were derailed by the duo’s omission while McCrorie was never going to play against his parent club.

He added: “It wasn’t great preparation but when you have players missing it is a good opportunity for others to show what they can do.”

One positive at Ibrox was a debut for Ryan Duncan, 16, as boss Derek McInnes said: “I know how important it’ll have been to pull on the red shirt at first-team level. He has a good future and has earned his opportunity.”
