Ryan Griffin contract details: Nothing guaranteed for Jets’ new TE

The Jets signed former Texans tight end Ryan Griffin to a one-year deal. Now we know how much he’ll make.

After being waived by Houston following an arrest during the 2019 NFL draft in Nashville, Griffin will make only $1.125 million with the Jets this season, according to ESPN’s Rich Cimini. Griffin’s deal includes a non-guaranteed base of $1 million. The cap charge to Gang Green is $1.375 million because it includes $250,000 in likely to be earned incentives.

Griffin will help stop the bleeding in the tight end room caused by Chris Herndon’s four-game suspension. Griffin joins a tight end group that includes Eric Tomlinson, Daniel Brown and Trevon Wesco, a trio that are primarily blocking tight ends.

Griffin, along with Temuchin Hodges, who was added on Wednesday, give the Jets some capable pass-catchers at the tight end position. Griffin gives New York a red zone threat, as all seven of his career touchdowns have come within 20 yards of the end zone.

In March 2017, the Texans signed Griffin to a three-year, $9 million contract that included $3.22 million guaranteed. Signing with the Jets, Griffin was forced to take a pay cut on a one-year, prove-it deal.

Now with the Jets, Griffin has a oppurtunity to win a starting job with Herndon out for the first four games. For Griffin to earn his money with Gang Green, he is going to need to win a 53-man roster spot outright. A non-guranteed base salary puts the pressure on Griffin to make the team.
