Ryan Giggs has been tipped to compete for the Manchester United manager's job provided Wales impress at next summer's European Championship.
Old Trafford icon Giggs previously took the temporary reins at United following David Moyes' dismissal in 2014 having become a player-coach a year earlier, while he later served as Louis van Gaal's assistant before leaving following the appointment of Jose Mourinho.
United's most decorated player and record appearance holder succeeded Chris Coleman as Wales manager in January 2018 and successfully secured their qualification for Euro 2020, which was pushed back by a year due to coronavirus.
Giggs' former team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has become subject to more pressure in the Red Devils hotseat following a disappointing start to the 2020/21 campaign and Hughes - who made more than 300 appearances for United across two spells in the 1980s and 1990s - believes a decent performance at the Euros could have his compatriot in the running for a high-profile return to Manchester.
"Ryan is in a good place in his management career. He is on an upward trend," Hughes told the BBC.
"He is probably more likely to get an opportunity at Manchester United than he was when Van Gaal left [in 2016].
"Maybe they felt his management CV wasn't strong enough at that point, but if he goes to the European Championship and does well, then there's no reason why he won't be in the frame."
