Ryan Giggs says Man Utd need to sign five new players to turn things around

Wales manager and Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs believe the club need to sign up to five new players if they are to compete at the top end of the table again.

United's 1-0 defeat to Newcastle left them just two points off the relegation zone in 12th place after a poor run of form which has seen them win just two games out of their last six in all competitions.

They splashed out £145 million on signing Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James over the summer, but according to Giggs they still need to strengthen much more in order to be competitive.

Speaking to Sky Sports Giggs said: "They need another four or five players. He (Solskjaer) has brought in three players but he probably needs seven or eight (altogether).

"But you can't do that over one transfer window, so you have to be patient because it will be slow.

"The culture has changed and what he is trying to do was much needed. He needs time."

The pressure mounted on Solskjaer following the loss to Newcastle, and the Norwegian boss apologised to supporters after the match for the manner of the defeat.

“I say sorry to the fans that we are not winning games,” he said.

“We need to get results, get momentum I can't give you what I acceptable. Every game at this club should be a win game.

“We have to raise our game and raise our supporters mood with Liverpool next.

“Confidence is a big thing. Performance and results give you confidence. When there is a decision to make they don't do it instinctively. It effects everyone.

“We are unhappy with the result. That brings out the mood of everyone. That is down to us starting a rebuild. We are going through a very difficult period."
