Ryan Giggs explains how Manchester United's Class of '92 would deal with Paul Pogba

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs has explained how his old team-mates would have dealt with a character such as Paul Pogba .

Pogba has endured a summer of discontent after issuing a statement insisting that he would like a new challenge away from United amid transfer speculation aplenty.

Real Madrid and Juventus have been heavily linked with the 26-year-old's services but the French World Cup winner is set to stay at Old Trafford and help the club improve upon their sixth-place finish in the Premier League last season.

Giggs knows a thing or two about a high-profile player seeking a move away, having played alongside Cristiano Ronaldo when the Portuguese star was at Old Trafford.

The Wales manager says the way his United team-mates, and most prominently Paul Scholes, used to deal with Ronaldo was to kick the forward to 'sort him out'. Giggs, however, does admit this approach is not common practice these days in the Premier League.

Asked how the United of old would have dealt with Pogba, Giggs told The Sun : "Kick him in training. But that doesn’t happen any more, you are starting to lose that. Now I’m not saying you kick everyone - but that was how Ronaldo got better.

"Paul Scholes would kick him if he took too many touches. Suddenly it clicked that you can’t keep dribbling ‘or else I’m going to get kicked’."

Whilst this approach is not used regularly in the Premier League, Giggs does point to Vincent Kompany's example after comments to the effect in his last season at Manchester City, which the Blues ended with a second straight Premier League crown.

"I saw an interview with Kompany at the end of the season. And he’s a bit old school and was asked about the week ahead of their last game at Brighton.

"He said: ‘Sometimes I have to give a player a kick!’. And I was thinking City might miss that this year."
