Ryan Gauld and Billy Gilmour's Euro 2020 Scotland hopes boosted as Oli McBurnie's injury changes squad outlook

It's fair to say to Oli McBurnie has yet to convince the Tartan Army that he can be a bonafide contender to lead the line in 16 caps for his country so far.

The £20m Sheffield United striker has yet to score in those 16 appearances for Scotland despite passing up a host of gilt-edged chances, though he in fairness did stroke home one of the five vital penalties in Belgrade to punch our ticket to Euro 2020.

But now McBurnie faces the very real possibility of missing out on the tournament - the country's first appearance at a major Finals in 21 years.

The 24-year-old has suffered a metatarsal injury - the same foot complaint that left David Beckham and Wayne Rooney hobbling at consecutive World Cups in the noughties.

Interim Blades boss Paul Heckingbottom said: "Oli is out for the season as well.

"He's got a stress fracture in his fifth metatarsal so we've lost two forwards, which isn't positive."

A section of the Scotland support might see it as a positive but Steve Clarke is a fan even if others remain sceptical about the rangy forward.

Record Sport runs the rule over the players who stand to benefit most if McBurnie is reduced to a spectator role when the tournament gets underway on June 14.

Billy Gilmour (Chelsea)

It would be easy to assume that McBurnie missing out would lead to another striker making the cut but it could see Billy Gilmour secure a '23rd man" role - a chance to experience the thrills and spills of a major tournament before taking over in the coming years. It's a source of real frustration for Scotland fans to see the 20-year-old struggle for game time under Thomas Tuchel after being one of departed boss Frank Lampard's favourites but the German insists the rising pass master's time will come. He's looked great in the FA Cup wins over Morecambe, Luton, Barnsley and Sheffield United. If, and it's a big if, he starts against Manchester City at Wembley in the semi-final and plays well then it could be enough to earn him a spot.

Ryan Gauld (Farense)

He's adored by Dundee United fans who regard him still as one of their own even though he left Tannadice for his Portuguese adventure back in 2014. The Sporting Lisbon switch didn't work out but recent seasons have shown the flicks and tricks that marked him out from his peers are still on show. The 25-year-old is playing the best football of his career and the likes of Braga are primed to move when he becomes a free agent at the end of his Farense contract. Gauld is a favourite among the Tartan Army who would like to see his mercurial magic light up the grandest stage. He would be a bit of a wild card but the feel good factor his selection would generate is worth the risk.

Lawrence Shankland (Dundee United)

The Dundee United striker revealed Clarke told him to keep ploughing away at United and he will remain in contention. The goals haven't flowed as freely this season for the 25-year-old but his all around game has impressed onlookers as he thrives in Micky Mellon's system. A straight swap in terms of striker in, striker out.

Kevin Nisbet (Hibs)

Clarke will have been left mightily impressed with Nisbet in Hibs' 2-1 defeat to Rangers. Yes, a goal is always nice for a striker but this was a performance full of clever runs and touches as he gave Connor Goldson and Filip Helander plenty to ponder. He made his debut against the Faroe Islands and McBurnie's setback only strengthens his case to be among the squad and Nisbet could be about to move up the pecking order.

Leigh Griffiths (Celtic)

The 30-year-old needs to worry about playing for his club regularly before thinking about a buoyant Scotland return but there's no doubt McBurnie's misfortune will give Griffiths new life. He is featuring, albeit sparingly, but Clarke would ideally like to be seeing him starting more games.
