Ryan Fraser's fantastic Scotland goal sends message to Newcastle and Steve Bruce

There was food for thought for Newcastle boss Steve Bruce as Ryan Fraser scored a wonderful leveller for Scotland in Israel.

Fraser's form for United has been disappointing in a stop-start season but on the international scene he's been excellent, and his smart finish for Steve Clarke's side was his second for his country this term. He has just a solitary strike for Newcastle.

Fraser played for 86 minutes as Scotland were held in Tel Aviv at they look to qualify for their first World Cup since 1998 and was excellent for most of the game playing alongside Southampton's Che Adams.

Fraser's continued fine form in an international jersey - playing in behind a forward rather than as one of three "split strikers" as is Bruce's preference - and that is proof that he does have the ability to unlock defences.

The former Bournemouth man has been an underwhelming presence for Newcastle so far but as fans pointed out after the goal, his ability is beyond doubt. Whether Newcastle and their under-fire manager are getting enough from them is up for debate.

Jamal Lewis was a second half substitute for Northern Ireland, brushing off worries about an groin injury, while Martin Dubravka missed out for Slovakia with a stomach complaint.

Ciaran Clark, meanwhile, endured a miserable Saturday night for Ireland as he was substituted on 61 minutes before Luxembourg secured a memorable upset win. Jeff Hendrick was an unused sub.
