Ryan Fraser has an added incentive to keep Newcastle in the Premier League as he talks new role

Ryan Fraser will do 'everything he can' to impress in Newcastle United's final nine games of the season to secure a starting spot for Scotland at Euro 2020.

Fraser caught the eye for Scotland during the international break - scoring against both Israel and the Faroe Islands - and the 27-year-old is now due back on Tyneside ahead of the Magpies' huge match against Spurs on Sunday.

Newcastle are just two points clear of the relegation zone - albeit Steve Bruce's side have a game in hand on 18th-placed Fulham - and Fraser has already vowed to 'come back with a mentality of pulling us out of the dirt'.

Fraser has an added incentive to keep the black-and-whites in the Premier League; the forward will be desperate to start Scotland's opening game of the Euros against the Czech Republic at Hampden Park on June 14 as the Tartan Army compete in their first major tournament in 23 years.

"I need to try and get there first," Fraser said after Scotland's 4-0 win against the Faroes. "We've still got nine games or something like that, the rest of the season, two-and-a-half months.

Why Newcastle United supporters want Steve Bruce sacked

"I need to try and go back and play and do well and hopefully the manager picks me. I don't just want to come along; I want to be in the starting XI for that first game in the summer so I'll do everything I can."

Fraser has been mainly used as a split striker by Bruce since Newcastle switched to a 4-3-1-2 back in January and it would be a surprise if the Scotland international did not start up front against Spurs.

Scotland boss Steve Clarke has also tapped into Fraser's versatility and the 27-year-old impressed at right wing-back on Wednesday night.

"I hadn't played right wing-back in about four years if I'm going to be honest so when the gaffer asked me to do it, I'll play anywhere he wants me to play," Fraser added.

"I think that's why we're doing so well. It's because everyone wants to play for the manager and when you want to play for the manager, you'll do anything for him.

"You'll run through brick walls for him and when he asked me to play right wing-back, it was never going to be no. I just gave it my all and, obviously, I'm happy to get the goal and the win at the end of the day.

"I've never said it but I'm buzzing to get the clean sheet as well, which I never thought I'd say. It's just nice."
