Ryan Fitzpatrick won’t rule out joining the Patriots: ‘I can’t be as picky as Matt Stafford”

Ryan Fitzpatrick is open to joining the New England Patriots. In fact, it sounds like he’s open to joining just about any NFL team that will have him.

While quarterback Matthew Stafford reportedly said he’d be OK with getting traded to anywhere except the Patriots, Fitzpatrick didn’t rule out joining New England during an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.”

“I love Matt Stafford,” Fitzpatrick said Tuesday. “I don’t know him real well as a guy, but as a player, watching him, I’m real excited to see what happens with him on the Rams.

“But no. For me, I can’t be as picky as Matt Stafford.”

It’s a bit early for Fitzpatrick to have a real handle on where he’s going to land. Because the NFL has tampering rules in place, he won’t speak to teams about their interest, with the exception of the Miami Dolphins, who can-resign him. But because they turned over the starting job to Tua Tagovailoa, the 2020 fifth-overall pick, during last season, Fitzpatrick isn’t likely to go back to Miami. He’s probably going to hit free agency when it opens in March. Until then, he said he’s not going to worry too heavily over his future.

“That stuff doesn’t really happen until March,” Fitzpatrick said, “so what I’ve learned over the years is not to sit and worry about it or put too much time into it until that March date rolls around.”
