Ryan Finley’s early returns during OTAs seem all over the place

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Ryan Finley is one of the most interesting players at OTAs this year.

Interesting in plenty of ways, at least. Finley, a guy the Bengals traded up to get, has been hailed by some such as Todd McShay as a potential starting passer.

But Finley had a rough start to OTAs recently, as ESPN’s Katherine Terrell pointed out: “Ryan Finley hasn’t impressed so far. Granted, it’s early and he’s getting third string snaps, but today overthrew his WR and was picked off on one play. Does make you wonder if they keep 3 QBs this year though if this is what training camp looks like.”

But the potential Andy Dalton backup did end up righting the ship:

It just goes to show not all rookies are going to end up as hyped as say, Drew Sample, even in non-contact May practices.

The conversation about three quarterbacks is worthwhile, at least. The Bengals typically don’t keep three but they won’t part ways with Finley if he’s struggling, which could mean a third roster spot goes to Jeff Driskel.

But that is getting quite ahead of things. As expected based on the coaching staff’s assessment of Finley after the draft, he’s going to come along slowly and not make a serious push for anything more than a backup spot.
