Ryan Edwards verdict revealed as defender learns fate following tackle on Rangers' Alfredo Morelos

Dundee United defender Ryan Edwards won't be banned for his tackle which injured Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos.

The Ibrox striker was left with a nasty gash in his knee after the centre back caught him with his studs during the 4-0 win for Steven Gerrard's men.

Edwards escaped punishment at the time but debate has been raging since the incident, with a number of pundits saying the incident merited a red card. Others, including former English top flight referee Dermot Gallagher, have said it isn't a sending off offence.

And it has emerged the defender won't face an retrospective punishment from the SFA after three former referees failed to unanimously agree that a clear red card offence had been missed.

Morelos was stretchered off following the incident, and although Gerrard feared the worst, the frontman could return to action towards the end of the month.

When asked if Edwards should have seen red, Gerrard said at the weekend: "I don't want to make any headlines and say the kid should have got this, or should have got that. I don't want to be that type of manager.

"But what I would say is I'd be very interested to see what the decision would have been from the officials if the shoe was on the other foot and it was Alfredo who's made that tackle."
