Ryan Edwards: Nigel Clough assesses new signing and what Craig Levein told him

Burton Albion boss Nigel Clough says he’s getting a player who will “run all day” in Ryan Edwards.

The Aussie midfielder completed his move to the East Midlands yesterday, leaving Hearts after just a year at Tynecastle .

It was a year that started with him being frozen out and sent on loan, but ended with him starting and giving Hearts the lead in May’s Scottiish Cup final.

The prospect of regular first team football was more likely elsewhere however, and he became the Brewers’ fifth signing of the summer.

Hearts fans would never describe Edwards as the most technically gifted they’ve seen, but his work rate and attitude endeared him to plenty once he got a chance to play.

And it’s those qualities that Nigel Clough values in his newest recruit.

"He'll run all day, he'll get goals, create chances and hopefully be on the end of some things, just with his willingness to run," he told Derbyshire Live.

"We're very pleased he has joined us.

"The Aussies have a great attitude, we saw with Jackson. He said he'd been speaking to Jackson today.

"They have a good work ethic. I talked to Hearts manager Craig Levein about him over the weekend and he said exactly the same thing.

"He said, 'I was going to keep him, but I've got a couple ahead of him and it's not really fair because he's such a good lad'.

"He wants to come down to England and have a chance - and we've given him that chance."

Former Celtic, Kilmarnock and Ross County player and Edwards’ compatriot Jackson Irvine enjoyed a successful time at Burton, but Clough wants to avoid comparisons between the two.

He (Edwards) is a different player, he's a different kind of player altogether," he added.

"Jackson was a full Australian international. He's a very, very good player.

"Hopefully we won't be expecting too many comparisons like that."
