Ryan Edwards escapes Alfredo Morelos charge as Dundee United defender faces no action over challenge on Rangers star

Ryan Edwards has dodged retrospective action over the challenge which led to Alfredo Morelos being stretchered off at Ibrox - after a panel of ex-referees failed to reach consensus on the incident.

The Dundee United defender escaped without a booking following the second half incident that left Rangers striker Morelos with a gash above the knee.

SFA Compliance Officer Clare Whyte could have stepped in had referee Kevin Clancy and his officials not got a full look at the challenge or if they deemed it had endangered Morelos by excessive force.

Whyte had until 3pm this afternoon to raise a fast track notice of complaint.

But it’s understood a panel of ex-referees couldn’t agree on whether the incident was worthy of further action.

The decision is likely to have come down to whether Edwards was guilty of being reckless, or committing serious foul play.

The former is punished with a yellow card, while a red must be given for "a tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality".

Saturday’s incident sparked debate among fans and pundits.

But former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher backed Clancy’s initial decision.

He said: “This tackle will split lots and lots of people because many people think it’s a red card and a lot of people think it’s not.

“I actually don’t because Edwards plays the ball first – he gets the ball first.

“It’s unfortunate he follows through and catches Morelos across the knee.

“What you would say is without a doubt he gets the ball and because of Morelos coming in towards him he catches him.

“It’s inevitable but I don’t think it’s a red card.”
