Ryan Dalziel battles to podium finish at Sebring

SCOTS endurance racer Ryan Dalziel has continued his impressive form in the US with another podium finish at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

He and his Era Motorsport team-mates Kyle Tilley and Dwight Merriman claimed second place in their LMP2 Oreca at the Florida event last weekend.

But they had to battle hard for the result as they were frustrated by a series of badly timed full-course cautions.

It follows victory earlier in the year at the famous Rolex 24 at Daytona and the team is now second in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship LMP2 standings.

Dalziel said: “That was definitely an exciting race. We just got caught with a couple of bad yellows. But we fought from a couple laps down to being within a couple of seconds of victory. To be as close as we were at the end is a personal victory for us.”

Meanwhile, Dundee’s Finlay Hutchison will once again return to the international stage this year after signing up with top Audi Sport squad Sainteloc Racing.

He’ll compete for the outfit on board an R8 LMS GT3 in both the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup and Intercontinental GT Challenge.

The 21-year-old said: “This really is going to be my most high-profile season yet. It’s an amazing opportunity at this point in my career. I’m really pleased to be back in the Endurance Cup and looking forward to racing at all of the awesome tracks.

“The major highlights, though, will be the chance to race at Indianapolis in the USA and Kyalami in South Africa for the first time. I know both will be amazing experiences.” His season will get under way at Monza in Italy over the weekend of April 17 and 18.

And a week after unveiling plans for the 2021 British Rally Championship, organisers have announced a surprise opening event to provide more thrills.

The BRC season will now get under way with a circuit rally – the Neil Howard Stages – at Oulton Park venue in Cheshire on May 31.

Series manager Iain Campbell said: “The BRC prides itself on being progressive and the Neil Howard Stages is certainly going to provide a very different start to the 2021 season for our championship contenders.”
