Ryan Christie says Celtic are 'desperate' to play out the season as he makes early end admission

Celtic star Ryan Christie is "desperate" to seal a ninth title in a row on the pitch as he admits being crowned champions without playing would be strange.

The Hoops were 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership when the coronavirus pandemic saw football called to a halt.

There are growing fears that the season won't be able to resume, which would mean working out the table based on points per game as per an SPFL resolution voted through earlier this month.

That would make Neil Lennon 's side champions for a ninth season in a row, but the Celtic players would much prefer to do it on the pitch.

Christie told BT Sport's Scottish Football Extra: "Everybody at our club would be desperate to play out the final few games.

"Because of the way we were playing before the break, we were on such a terrific run that we felt really confident and towards the end of the season there are so many massive games you won’t be a part of so it’s gutting to miss out on those.

"I’m missing (football) loads. To be fair to my girlfriend, she tries her best but she’s not that good in goal.

"It’d be strange (to end it early).

"We’d be crowned rightful champions, I think we have been pretty dominant domestically. But it’s the bigger picture: if that has to be the case to save lives then so be it.

"I’ve definitely taken (football) for granted, I feel that now. When football does come back and we can fill stadiums again, there’ll be a real appreciation for it. You realise how big it is in people’s lives, so when it does come back it'll be a real boost to the sport."

Christie took time to break into the Celtic first team, and he admits he wasn't ready when he first joined from Inverness.

He said: "When I first joined, I was a bit naïve. I went on loan to Aberdeen, and that helped me as they’re still a big team with big goals.

"So breaking into Celtic, I’ve realised how demanding it is on you as a player and having to perform every week. But once you reach that level, you take it in your stride and it’s a pressure you enjoy because it makes you keep your game at the top."
