Ryan Christie joins Celtic crusade as he reveals steps he’ll take if Lazio fans dish out racist abuse

Celtic star Ryan Christie says he would walk off the pitch if he witnessed racial abuse during a match.

The Hoops take on Lazio in the Europa League tomorrow night, and the hardcore fans of the Italian club are notorious for their links to the far-right.

The Curva Nord section of the Stadio Olimpico will be closed for the return game with Celtic after fans gave fascist salutes against Rennes, and Italian special operations police will follow fans to Glasgow to keep an eye on the ultras.

Speaking at the press conference on Wednesday afternoon, Christie was asked if he'd walk off if racial abuse was directed at his teammates: "Obviously, first thing's first, if racial abuse becomes a part of this game then it's up to UEFA and the referees to make a decision.

"I'd obviously have no qualms about walking off the park. I think the manager said he'd be happy for us to do it.

"I think in this day and age it's probably going to need strong stances like that to really put a message across and try to stop it."

Celtic currently lead the group, but will fall behind Lazio if they lose on Thursday.

"It's a great match for us, between two great teams. If we win it could be a turning point in the group.

"We'll be facing the best team in the group.

"I know Lucas Leiva well from his time at Liverpool, I watched him on TV and it'll be nice to play against him.

"Then there are a lot of stars like (Ciro) Immobile and (Sergej) Milinkovic-Savic."

The midfielder has become a firm favourite of the Celtic support this season, and it was put to him that his popularity is akin to that of captain Scott Brown.

Christie replied: "It's nice, but you can't compare me to him - I'm not bald!"
