Ryan Christie issued Celtic challenge as Frank McAvennie hails 'wonderful' David Turnbull

Frank McAvennie reckons David Turnbull is in the form of his life - and challenged Ryan Christie to follow his example.

Turnbull has been a key part of Ange Postecoglou's tenure at Celtic so far, striking up an understanding with Callum McGregor and Tom Rogic in the middle of the park.

Christie, meanwhile, has also been in impressive form and registered three assists against Dundee in his last outing.

An injury has kept him on the sidelines since, however, with Turnbull rising to the occasion and providing a creative outlet in his absence.

And Celtic hero McAvennie has challenged Christie to come back firing and strike up some "healthy competition" with the man stealing his thunder.

He told Football Insider: “Against Hearts, Turnbull was playing with a bit of freedom in Christie’s absence as they’re very similar players.

“They’re both very good at playing in pockets of space, so it’d be good to see a bit of healthy competition between the two of them.

“I don’t know what the situation is with Christie’s contract – but something’s not right there. Maybe he will move on.

“Turnbull is a wonderful player, I felt really sorry for him when he was struggling with injury before joining.

“I think him and Kyogo will strike up a wonderful partnership.

“I had a great relationship with Paul McStay and Peter Grant in midfield at Celtic, they always knew what I was doing.

“They were taking players away from me, and I can see Turnbull doing something similar for Kyogo.

“Some of Turnbull’s flicks and touches, I haven’t seen anything like it at Celtic Park for years.

"As a striker, I love it. Kyogo will love it.
