Ryan Burnett believes there is a "strong possibility" of Nonito Donaire rematch

Ryan Burnett believes there is a "strong possibility" of a rematch with Nonito Donaire.

Burnett enjoyed an impressive return to action on Friday night by outclassing Jelbirt Gomera at he Ulster Hall .

The Belfast boxer stopped Gomera with two crunching body shots in the sixth round of their WBC International super-bantamweight clash.

It was Burnett's first fight since suffering a freak back injury during his World Boxing Super Seris quarter-final with Donaire last November.

Donaire was sitting ringside on Friday night, the Filipino legend showing his support to Burnett following the unfortunate ending to that first fight.

Asked whether he would be keen on the rematch, Burnett told iFLTV: "I would be very interested in the rematch. I didn't get to finish my fight with him.

"I think it is a fight that Belfast would like to see, so it is a strong possibility."

Burnett claimed the WBC International super-bantamweight title with his win over Jelbirt.

Now he is targeting a major title in the division after moving up from bantamweight.

"I want to become two-weight world champion," he added.

"If I grow into super-bantamweight it is a division that I think I can be a strong contender against anyone.

"A few people might be happy after watching that tonight. I maybe wasn't as strong as I had anticipated but it is a process.

"I am willing to learn and adapt."

Reflecting on his win on Friday night, Burnett said: "It is good to be back but I felt a bit rusty in there tonight.

"I got the win and now I have to put the head down and get serious again. My injury is finally healed and I feel good.

"That was the longest I have ever been out of action, as an amateur or a professional. It was good to shake off the ring rust and get moving again.

"I am a bantamweight, I make that weight comfortably. Gomera was down from featherweight and I felt those extra pounds. But as a fighter you want that challenge. I am still learning.”
