Ruud Gullit slams Manchester United backed super league as AC Milan legend claims proposal will 'kill clubs'

AC Milan legend Ruud Gullit has fired a withering attack on “harmful” proposals for a breakaway Euro super league - insisting it will kill clubs and cause irreversible damage to football.

The Dutch icon won the Champions League twice as a player with the Italian giants who face Celtic tomorrow in the Europa League.

And while Milan are one of a number of superpowers expected to be major players if the multi-billion pound competition gets off the ground, Gullit has launched a passionate attack on the plans.

Record Sport told yesterday how FIFA are involved in negotiations with more than a dozen of Europe's top clubs after securing £4.6billion of funding with US bankers JP Morgan.

But Gullit took to Twitter to vent his anger at the proposal.

He said: “A Super League would damage the beautiful game of football which we know and love in an irreversible way.

“It’s not right, it’s harmful and driven by wrong intentions. It’s out of greed.

“The Champions League made me the footballer I was and taught me lessons for the rest of my life.

“This proposed league will kill clubs that deserve support, instead of opposition.

“I feel strongly against this matter and hope people will stand up for what is right, as will I.”

Liverpool and Manchester United are among the Premier League giants who have been sounded out.

Other clubs from around Europe, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Bayern Munich and PSG would also be seen as major players.
