Ruud Gullit rips into 'overrated' David Luiz amid Arsenal struggles

Ruud Gullit claims David Luiz is 'overrated' as the error-strewn defender fights for his Arsenal future.

The Brazilian's time at the Emirates could be drawing to a close, with his contract due to expire at the end of the month.

Luiz was named on the bench for Arsenal's return to Premier League action against Manchester City last week, but entered the fray as an early substitute for the injured Pablo Mari.

The defender endured a nightmare at the Etihad, with his slip leading to Raheem Sterling's opener before his red card gifted Kevin de Bruyne the second goal from the penalty spot.

Former Chelsea star Gullit says he doesn't understand the hype around Luiz, who missed the defeat at Brighton through suspension.

"Yes, David is not doing well," Gullit told Ziggo Sport.

"I think he’s an overrated player, really. When he played in midfield I thought he was reasonable, but then there was already discussion about what he actually is as a player.

"But he preferred to play as a defender… Well, we all remember the match between Brazil and Germany (7-1 at the 2014 World Cup). I just can’t understand it!

"Most clubs have done away with him, but he keeps coming back somewhere."

Luiz held up his hands following his horror show in Manchester as speculation over his future rumbles on.

He admitted: "It’s not the team’s fault. It was my fault. I take the decision to play, I should take a decision in the last two months but I didn’t.

"Today, I think the team did well, especially after the ten men. The coach is amazing, all the players did amazing, it was my fault."
