Rutherglen woman organises fundraiser to express support for mental health charity

A Rutherglen woman who was given a lifeline when she was struggling with her mental health has arranged a fundraiser to express her gratitude for the support she received.

Former Stonelaw High School pupil Claire McAulay has organised an evening of stand-up comedy and music at The Clutha bar in Glasgow, with donations going to the Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH).

“I have had experiences in the past with mental health and I suffered with anxiety,” explained Claire, 29, who grew up in Spittal .

“I have also had close friends who have suffered from poor mental health and have taken their own lives.

“I feel that something needs to be done to encourage people to talk. I got support from SAMH in the past, and they are great.

“They are able to provide people to talk to, and they give you great resources when you need them.”

Claire, who now lives in Springhall, has organised fund-raising events in the past for SAMH and other charities, some of which have raised up to £500.

And it’s her hope that latest fundraiser, Cracking Up at The Clutha, will generate even more vital funds for SAMH.

The evening of entertainment on Thursday, November 28 will be hosted by Scott Haddow, whose business, 11:11 Events has been instrumental in helping Claire pull the fundraiser together.

Acts will include Grim Leiper, Ronnie Park, Cubby, Natalie Sweney, Ben Verth, Sheila Blige, Obie, Dee Maxwell, Jimi Longmuir and Lady Shona.

The guest singer on the night will be Laura B, who shot to fame after her appearance on the BBC’s All Together Now hit talent show. Doors will open at 7pm. Entry is free, with donations going to SAMH.
