Rutherglen star slams "disappearing act" in Hurlford defeat as relegation fear remains

Scott Schoneville slammed Rutherglen Glencairn's "disappearing act" in the second half of their heavy defeat to Hurlford United.

The Glens were 1-0 up at half-time through a Jack McIlveen strike in the West of Scotland Premier Division clash at Hamish B Allan Stadium yesterday, but suffered a major collapse after the break when they conceded four goals.

United hit three goals in three minutes through Lewis Morrison, Sam Lidington and Paul McKenzie before McKenzie grabbed his second of the game in stoppage time.

And Glens' man of the match Schoneville admitted it simply wasn't good enough as his side slipped to 10th in the table.

The defender said: "It was a very strong first half and we worked our socks off, but we just did a disappearing act in the second half.

"It was as if a different team came out.

"It was a bit of a shambles, to be honest.

"We had chances in the first half and they never really wired our goalie much.

"But this is what good teams do to you.

"They are in the top six for a reason and if you don't take your chances good teams punish you.

"We could have gone one, two, three up but in the second half we lost it.

"It's not a 4-1 game at all, but that's what good teams do to you.

"It's good for myself to get the man of the match award and for any onlookers who may be watching me.

"But it's never great when you lose the game.

"I've had a few awards this season but I'm more focused on bouncing back from this defeat and putting it right next week."

Glens are yet to pick up a win in 2022 and their recent run leaves them six points off the relegation zone in the top flight.

The visit of rock bottom Bonnyton Thistle awaits next weekend and Schoneville added: "The first part of the season we were outstanding. It was brilliant and we wanted to keep that going.

"So we don't want this wait for another win to keep going on.

"We don't want to get dragged further and further into a relegation battle.

"Hopefully next week that first win of the year will come."
