Rutherglen schoolgirl rings the bell to signal end of cancer treatment

A Rutherglen schoolgirl proudly 'rang the bell' on her 11th birthday to mark the end of two-and-a-half years of gruelling cancer treatment.

St Mark's Primary School pupil, Kaiann McAllister, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in February 2019.

The youngster then endured months of chemotherapy and operations for the various different side effects which have included pressure on the brain, Avascular necrosis (AVN) in her feet and ankles, and numerous spine fractures.

But now Kaiann is essentially cancer free and looking forward to the summer holidays ahead with her family and friends.

Kaiann's proud mum Sharon, originally of Hamilton, told Lanarkshire Live : "After almost two-and-a-half years of cancer treatment, which has seen Kaiann take liquid chemotherapy every single day, we are delighted to say that she is showing no cancer cells in her body.

"We still have a long journey ahead and we have to get through the next five years in remission, but for now she is cancer free.

"The next step for Kaiann is to see how her bone marrow handles being off chemotherapy.

"As much as we are delighted that the treatment has come to an end, Kaiann has still been left with a high brain pressure, which has resulted in some memory issues, as well as the multiple agonising fractures on her body.

"But we know she will get there. She has come this far afterall, so there is no stopping her now."

As well as ringing the bell in the family's summerhouse at home due to COVID-19 restrictions, Kaiann was then treated to a week's caravan break with her mum, dad Mark and little brother Karsson courtesy of the Logan's Fund charity.

Sharon added: "A huge thank you to everyone who helped to make Kaiann's 11th birthday and bell ringing ceremony extra special.

"And to Logan's Fund who sent us away to Lossiemouth for an amazing family adventure to celebrate the end of an awful two years. It was a lovely way to end her treatment.

"We're now looking forward to the summer holidays, with hopefully very little hospital trips and stays, and then getting Kaiann back to school full time with her pals in August."
