Rutherglen road closed after local discovers possible bomb in his garden

Police closed busy Burnside Road on Saturday after a shocked resident discovered what he thought was a bomb in his garden.

Around 3.45pm, officers received a report that a resident had been digging in his garden and unearthed a metal object, approximately 18 inches long, which he believed may be some form of potentially explosive shell.

Police attended and sent photographs to explosives experts in Edinburgh.

As a safety precaution the road was closed and residents in the immediate vicinity were asked to stay at the rear of their properties.

A bomb disposal team attended in Burnside and found the shell to be empty and safe, and removed it for disposal.

Inspector Stephen McManus said: “Officers were called to a report of a metal object which was subsequently identified as an empty shell casing.

“As a public safety precaution officers implemented a road closure until the arrival of explosive ordinance disposal (EOD) who confirmed that the shell was empty and it has now been removed for disposal.

“I would like to thank the member of the public for their vigilance and prompt contact with the police.

“I would like to reiterate this was an empty shell which has been removed and there is no wider risk to the public.”
