Rutherglen pub owner fears for the future after Boris Johnson advises people to stay away from bars and restaurants

Rutherglen’s only remaining independent pub owner has spoken of his concerns as the coronavirus sparks uncertainty.

John Vickers opened the Sportman Bar in 1989, but  now fears for what the future  may hold after the Prime Minister told people to avoid going to pubs and restaurants.

He told the Reformer : “We are very worried, but so is everyone in the trade.

“What doesn’t help is the fact that Boris Johnson has told  people to avoid pubs, but he hasn’t given pubs any guidance  on if we should close and if we  do, will there be financial support for us.

“We are worried as we know it’s now a case of when, as opposed to if, we have to close down.

“More guidance and support would be helpful.

“If rates could be paused when we are forced to close then that would be great as we obviously wouldn’t be making any money when we aren’t open.

“It’s frightening times. It’s all very uncertain.”

John previously said that he  is proud to have been able to create a family-friendly bar with entertainment, and a social hub that’s at the heart of the community.

He added: “Our clientele is mainly over 55-years-old and a  lot of the time, this is the only interaction some of these people are getting. Our regulars are very much like extended family.

“If we are forced to close down, a lot of people may suffer due to the lack of company that they have.

“And we have to think of our staff as well.

“It is worrying for the staff  and we don’t want anyone to be at risk.

“We are business as usual until we are instructed otherwise.

“As always, hygiene is a priority at the Sportsman and staff  are ensuring that surfaces are cleaned thoroughly throughout the day.

“In these times of uncertainty, I’d like to welcome everyone as normal to the Sportsman.”
