Rutherglen police praise residents for staying indoors over Easter weekend

Local police have praised Rutherglen and Cambuslang residents for remaining indoors and not flocking to parks over the Easter weekend, despite the good weather.

Cops were spotted at the likes of Cambuslang Park on Good Friday and over the weekend.

However, Inspector Stephen McManus of Rutherglen police office told the Reformer their presence was more of a precautionary measure.

He said: “It was a case of being proactive rather than reactive, especially as we knew there was good weather expected.

“We had officers go to the parks and keep an eye on things, making sure there weren’t any groups trying to congregate there.

“Just having that presence there worked very well; there weren’t any incidents with groups that we had to respond to and it seems like the message has got across to most people.”

The news came as it was revealed that a further 40 fixed penalty notices were issued across the whole of South Lanarkshire between April 1 and April 9.

That follows an initial 17 notices being issued from March 27 to April 1, when police were first granted emergency powers to issue the fines.

Chief Superintendent Alan Waddell, the divisional commander for South Lanarkshire, said: “The overwhelming majority of people are complying with the instruction from government and we are very grateful for their support.

“I know that we normally look forward to enjoying the outdoors or gathering with friends and family at this time of year.

“However, please continue to play your part by staying at home to save lives and protect the NHS.

“The Chief Constable stressed the importance of this when he spoke with the First Minister and asked the public to continue with the changes, even as the weather gets better.”
