Rutherglen police incident: Man and woman attacked on Cathcart Road as police hunt suspect

Police are hunting for a suspect who launched a violent attack on a man and a woman in Rutherglen.

Detectives say the male victim, 32, was seriously assaulted and the woman, also 32, was assaulted during the shock incident on Cathcart Road shortly after midnight on Sunday morning.

They had been walking on Cathcart Road as they were approached by the man before he launched the attack and fled the scene.

Shortly after, a Vauxhall Astra stopped near the couple as they continued along Cathcart Road, with the same suspect getting out the passenger side. He then threatened them again before other members of the public intervened.

Police confirmed the male victim was left with serious facial injuries with the couple having been rushed to hospital.

Officers have this evening issued a description of the suspect and are encouraging anyone with information to come forward.

A Police Scotland statement advised: "Detectives are appealing for information after a man was seriously assaulted and a woman was assaulted in Rutherglen on Sunday, 19 September.

"Around 12.05am on Sunday morning, the man and woman, both aged 32 years, were walking on Cathcart Road near to its junction with Farie Street, Rutherglen when they were approached by a man who assaults them both then makes off.

"A short time later, a Vauxhall Astra stops near the couple as they continue along Cathcart Road, and the same suspect gets out the passenger side. He threatens them again and then other members of the public who are nearby intervene and speak to him.

"They were both taken to Glasgow Royal Infirmary where he was treated for a serious facial injury.

"The suspect is described as white, around 5ft 11ins in height with short dark hair. He was wearing a dark-coloured polo shirt and jeans."

Detective Constable Stephen Gordon of Cambuslang Police Station said: “At the time of this assault, Cathcart Road was busy and I would like to appeal to any witnesses to this attack and I would also like to appeal to those who came to the couple’s assistance to contact us.”

“Our enquiries are continuing. Officers are viewing CCTV from in and around the local area to help trace the man responsible and the Vauxhall Astra he got out of. Anyone with information should contact Cambuslang Police Office through 101 quoting reference 2902 of 19 September. Alternatively Crimestoppers can be contacted on 0800 555 111, where anonymity can be maintained.”
