Rutherglen man in 'critical condition' following attempted murder bid

A Rutherglen man is in a “critical condition” following a vicious attack that police are treating as attempted murder.

The 32-year-old was rendered unconscious after the violent incident which took place on Saturday night at a block of flats on Castlefern Road.

Police rushed to the scene around 9.15pm, after receiving reports of a male in distress within the common close.

A source told the Reformer : “The man was badly injured and lying unconscious in the close when the police arrived.

“The paramedics were there too, and they took away in the ambulance.

“Police went door to door afterwards.

“Things like that don’t happen around here. It’s awful, everyone is shocked.”

The Reformer understands the victim sustained a number of injuries in the attack and is in an induced coma.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 9.15 pm on Saturday, January 9, police were called after a 32-year-old man was found seriously injured in the close of flats on Castlefern Road, Rutherglen.

“He was taken by ambulance to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where medical staff describe his condition as critical.

“Enquiries as to how he came about his injuries are ongoing.

“Anyone with information in connection is asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 3230 of 9 January.”
