Rutherglen gran sends cards to community during crisis

A kind-hearted Rutherglen gran is putting her stamp on local efforts by offering to send birthday, get well or anniversary wishes to people’s loved ones through her beautiful, hand crafted greetings cards – all free of charge.

Touched by reports she reads in the Reformer of people’s efforts during the pandemic, 70-year-old Moira Leonard wanted to make her own contribution, while remaining at home.

Creative Moira hit on the idea of offering to send out her handmade cards on behalf of people who cannot get to the shops to send cards to loved ones in the UK.

She explained: “I have been inspired by the selfless acts that people have carried out.

“As I am over 70 with some health issues, my family really want me to stay in and I have been trying to think of something I could do to help others.

“I’ve been making cards for years,
and wondered if it might help if I was to offer to send a handmade card at my expense on behalf of anyone who can’t get out.”

Moira calls on her imagination and creative talent to make cards using a variety of techniques, including watercolour and acrylics.

She is inviting people to contact her through a new email account she has created to nominate a card recipient, tell her the message they’d like her to write inside, and provide the recipient’s address.

Using stamps she’s paid for, she will then arrange for the card to wing its way to the recipient’s UK address .

“I would otherwise have offered to do something like delivering shopping. But my family have done a lot for me and feel I cannot go against their wishes, so I am staying at home,” said gran of three, Moira.

“But like many people, I am going stir crazy and I am keen to do something that will benefit somebody else. And, instead of donating to some other charity, I could pay for the UK postage.”

Moira has recently been coming up with design ideas for children’s cards – a new departure for her.

“I thought some grandparents might not be able to get out to send cards to their grandchildren,” continued Moira, who’s Reformer is delivered by her granddaughter, Holly Lonie, 16.

To arrange for one of Moira’s cards to be send on your behalf, email her at createacard@outlook.com

Tell her the recipient’s name and address, explain the occasion, and give her the wording you’d like included in the card.

“We are quite secure in our house and I feel very lucky,” added Moira.

“But I’d just like to do something for somebody else.”
