Rutherglen Glencairn will survive the coronavirus Scottish football shut down says defiant boss

Rutherglen Glencairn boss Willie Harvey insists the club won’t fold due to the coronavirus suspension – but admits they will take relegation on the chin if it comes to it.

Harvey has some sympathy for the powers that be who need to make decisions on how to take things forward, but stressed relegation wouldn’t be the “end of the world” for the club.

He said: “If they turn around and say that’s it, the season ends as it is now, then that’s us relegated with 14 games to play.

“I don’t think we could take action if that happens.

“At the moment, football is a total non-matter, it’s all about public health.

“It’s not the end of the world if we get relegated. We would be unhappy with that but nobody would die, and in the bigger picture there is so much more going on.

“We will not go out of business. We will regroup, come back up again.

“There is so much going on, so much to take in, and I have every sympathy with the people who need to make decisions over this.

“I would not like to be in that position, because no matter what you do, somebody will be unhappy.”

The Glens manager says the bigger picture and the problems caused by the pandemic are of far larger concern than junior football.

He added: “There are financial implications, we will all have financial constraints.

“We will be okay, but there will come a point when it will be a problem. If this is still the situation in six months’ time then it will affect every club in world football.

“We’re all in the same boat, and we’re all in limbo. We have to be sensible, we have to take precautions. If anybody has a cold they need to stay away from the squad.”

Harvey says one solution might be to play summer football, but even that has issues.

“We have to think about contracts, payments, promotion, relegation, he said.

“How do we go about playing cup ties or re-signings? It’s a real spider’s web.”

On the suspension, Harvey said: “At senior level yes, it was the right decision to suspend football, but at ours it might have been a wee bit hasty.

“Our grounds are generally big enough for people to be separated from each other, and our crowds average about 250 to 300. Where do you draw the line?”
