Rutherglen Glencairn lifted by return of boss Willie Harvey after Covid battle

Willie Harvey made his return to Rutherglen Glencairn’s dug-out on Saturday for his side’s Strathclyde Demolition Cup quarter-final penalty shoot-out win at Neilston.

Harvey has been out of the game since September but had returned to the Hamish B. Allan Stadium as a spectator in recent weeks.

Saturday’s 1-1 draw, followed by a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win, was the first time Harvey had been in the dug-out since, even if it was in an observational capacity, and assistant Joe Pryce says it provided everybody at the club with a major boost.

He said: “Willie was at the game, that was him back in the dug-out.

“It’s good for the players and the fans to see him back, it has been a wee while that he’s been out for.

“It’s good for him as well, obviously, because he wants to get back, and he now feels fit enough and strong enough to come back in, so it’s good news all round.

“On Saturday he was just in the dug-out with us, but when he takes charge will be his decision.

“When Willie feels ready and able, then that will be his decision.

“But Willie has been missing for a wee while, and it’s always good to see him back.

“You can see the players’ response to it, and the fans responded to it.”

Glencairn are currently seventh in the West of Scotland League Premier Division table, with 30 points from 20 games.

On Saturday they travel to face 15th-placed Cumbernauld United.
